The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:
The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) condemns the decision of the BJP-led government to give clearance to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to set up office in India.
Coming soon after the visit of President Clinton, the clearance has been given in the name of fighting terrorism, drug trafficking etc. During the visit of the US President, his security and other related arrangements were handed over to US agencies.
There is no reason for an internal security agency of another country to be allowed to set shop in India, particularly if it is the infamous FBI, which is known for its espionage and subversive activities. This decision endangers national security and infringes upon our sovereignty. In the past many US intelligence officials have been caught collecting information from their Indian contacts. Such anti-national activities are now sought to be legalised by the government of India.
