Safdar Hashmi Murder Case

Ten persons accused in the Safdar Hashmi murder case have been found guilty and convicted in the court of the Additional Sessions Judge at Ghaziabad on November 3, 2003. The sentencing of the convicted will be done on November 5.

Safdar Hashmi, a noted theatre activist, progressive cultural personality and member of the CPI(M), was brutally murdered while performing a street play at Sahibabad, near Delhi, in January 1989. After fourteen long years, ten of the original 12 accused have been convicted. Two of the accused had died during the pendency of the trial.

Harkishan Singh Surjeet, General Secretary of the CPI(M), commenting on the verdict said that it is a welcome verdict, though belated.
