Press statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

                                           UP Governor’s Undemocratic Step

The Uttar Pradesh Governor, Shri Vishnu Kant Shastri, has taken the undemocratic step of recommending President’s rule in the state. Instead of accepting the claim of the largest single party after the assembly elections to form the government, the Governor has shown contempt for democratic norms. The only course open to the Governor was to ask Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav to form the government and prove his majority in the assembly within a specified time. It is not for the Governor sitting in the Raj Bhavan to decide who commands the confidence of the House.

Shri Vishnu Kant Shastri is well-known as a diehard member of the RSS who has proudly written about his participation in the kar seva which led to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. The role of such Governors make a mockery of electoral verdicts and democratic conventions.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) demands that the Governor’s recommendation be rejected and the leader of the largest single party be allowed to form the government.
