[Marxistindia] Victory of AKEL candidate in Cyprus

The General Secretary of the CC of AKEL, Comrade Demetris Christofias has won yesterday's Presidential Elections in Cyprus. He polled 53.36% of the vote as against his opponent Ioannis Kasoulides who polled 46.64. Comrade Demetris Christofias, besides  AKEL received support from  the Democratic Party (DIKO), the Social-Democrats EDEK, the Greens (Oikologoi), the United Democrats, the party of the Reconstriction of the Centre (Epalxi) and other groups. The other candidate, Ioannis Kasoulides was supported by the right-wing Democratic Rally (DISI).

 The Central Committee of the CPI(M) has sent the following congratulatory message to the AKEL:

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is pleased to hear the news of the election of Comrade  Demetris Christofias as the new President of the Republic of Cyprus. The Central Committee of the CPI(M) congratulates Comrade Demetris Christofias and the AKEL for this historic victory. 

 

This comprehensive victory over the candidate supported by the right wing forces is undoubtedly a defining movement in the history of modern Cyprus. 

 

The AKEL now has been entrusted with the onerous task of defining and deciding Cyprus's future; to search for a just and long term solution of the Cyprus problem that would be acceptable to Cypriot people. 

 

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has the honour of sharing this moment of glory with the AKEL and the people of Cyprus. It conveys its warm greetings to the Cypriot people on this occasion.
