CPI(M) West Bengal state committee member Comrade Bireswar Lahiri passed away in Tuesday late night. He was 68. Comrade Lahiri, former secretary of North Dinajpur district committee was suffering from various illnesses and was admitted in a Kolkata hospital.

Comrade Bireswar Lahiri was a leding student leader in northern Bengal in the late sixties. Later he was the President of DYF in undivided West Dinajpur district. In 1992, when the district was divided he became CPI(M) district Secretary of North Dinajpur, a responsibility he served until last December. He was serving as District Left Front convenor.

Comrade Bireswar Lahiri was repeatedly jailed and tortured in the seventies. He was arrested during Emrgency and served a 19 month imprisonment through MISA. Soft spoken and broad hearted Comrade Lahiri was loved by all.  

He is survived by two daughters.

Comrade Lahiri’s body was brought to CPI(M) state office in Wednesday morning. Party leaders showed respect to him. His body was taken to Raiganj, North Dinajpur district headquarters. The funeral rally will take place on Thursday.
