Nepal Developments

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India have issued the following statement:

We express our deep concern at the recent events which have affected Indo-Nepal relations. The alleged remarks by an Indian film actor have led to widespread protests in Kathmandu and Nepal. Four people have lost their lives in police firing. It is unfortunate that anti-Indian sentiments have been aroused in this episode.

Nepal and India have traditional and historically close ties. We are aware that there are certain irritants in Indo-Nepal relations. All the democratic forces in India who wish for harmonious ties between the two neighbouring countries want all outstanding problems between India and Nepal resolved amicably. The problems are not of such a nature which cannot be resolved through joint efforts.

We appeal to the people of both countries not to allow any vested interest to mar our common bonds of friendship.]
