CPI(M) Polit Bureau Statement on the attack on Yugoslavia

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the brazen military attack by US-led NATO forces on Yugoslavia. This unprovoked action is nothing but a naked expression of US imperialist aggressiveness to impose its global hegemony.

It is unprecedented in international law that a country is militarily attacked in order to force it to accept an `agreement’ that goes against that country’s national interests and sovereignty. Yugoslavia had clearly stated its intention of settling the problem of Kosovo Albanians within the framework of its national sovereignty by granting maximum possible autonomy to the Kosovo region. US imperialism, however, seeks to impose an `agreement’ which, for the first time in history, involves the stationing of NATO troops on the soil of a non-NATO country. No independent country with any self-respect can accept to voluntarily erode its national sovereignty.

These US-NATO strikes are bound to lead to the tragic loss of life of a high magnitude. US imperialism is, once again, adopting double standards when it expresses concern for the welfare of Kosovo Albanians. Such ethnic minorities like the Kurds in Turkey exist in many other countries as well. It is clear that the concern for Kosovo Albanians is only a pretext for US imperialism to impose its agenda in the Balkans. Having already divided former Yugoslavia, US imperialism and its West European NATO allies now seek to completely control the Balkans.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) reiterates that with the dismantling of the former USSR, the raison de etre for NATO’s existence ceases. Instead of dismantling the NATO, US imperialism is seeking its eastward expansion co-opting other countries into its designs to impose its hegemony over the world.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) calls upon the Union government to unequivocally condemn this US-NATO action. Any vacillation in this score will only provide grist to the mill of imperialist skullduggery.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) calls upon the Indian people to protest against growing US imperialist aggressiveness.
