Independent Foreign Policy -- Left Parties

Date:
Monday, October 3, 2005

Press Statement

The Left parties, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, Revolutionary Socialist Party and the Forward Bloc met on October 3, 2005 and have issued the following statement.

The meeting discussed the stand taken by the government of India on the Iran issue at the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Left parties consider India’s voting for the resolution on Iran to be a serious departure from an independent foreign policy. Keeping in mind the recent background of developments concerning India-US ties, the Left parties felt it necessary to mobilise democratic opinion all over the country in defence of an independent foreign policy. In this connection the Left parties decided that alongwith other political forces, organisations and eminent personalities, a national campaign for an independent foreign policy should be launched. A convention in Delhi will be organised by the end of October keeping in mind that the next board meeting of the IAEA will be held in November.
