Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has declared that the state government employees are free to join the RSS and participate in its programmes. This announcement has come soon after Prime Minister Vajpayee's justification of the decision of the Gujarat government to allow government employees to participate in RSS activities.

The UP Chief Minister's announcement citing the Prime Minister's stand is fraught with serious consequences for the civil service which has a specific role in the State structure. The BJP is determined to see that the RSS is entrenched in the administration. All the allies of the National Democratic Alliance, who have been assuring the people that the agenda of the coalition does not provide for any communal issue being taken up, should come out clearly as to how they view this development.

The subversion of the Constitutional order being undertaken by the BJP should not go unchallenged. The CPI(M) demands that the Central government immediately make a categorical declaration that the civil service conduct rules prohibit employees from participation in activities of organisations like the RSS.
