Tamil Nadu: The Red Flag Village

The irular settlement in kothattai village in parangipettai taluk, cuddalore dist has been renamed from vaikalmedu (meaning banks of canal) to sengodi nagar (red flag town) by the tribals there. Their 20 year long struggle for a their own land to build house materialised only after CPI(M) intervention.

In the allotted land for 11 families, they built up huts (later proper construction will be done), cleaned up the whole place with beautiful 'kolam' (rangoli) drawn. The whole area wore a festive look with colour papers and balloons. Sweets were distributed. Oil Lamp was lit and the fragrance of incense sticks was floating all around. The brightly painted name board was put up with red flags fluttering in the air. Ranjitha, Durga, Deivanai and other tribal women were making these

arrangements.
With a lot of enthusiasm and pride, the board was inaugurated by CC member Comrade U Vasuki.
