The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) congratulates the people of West Bengal for the successful general strike and hartal they observed today in the state. Despite large scale arrests, threats, intimidations and the unleashing of unprecedented violence by the state police and the ruling Trinamool Congress, the hartal evoked a spontaneous response from all walks of people in the state.
The Left Front has called for a general 12-hour strike and hartal in West Bengal on 30th April, to protest against massive rigging in the recently held municipal elections. With the help of police and state administration, wholesale booth capturing, violent attacks on voters and opposition activists took place across the state.
The elections to 91 municipalities including two corporations in West Bengal held on April 25, 2015 constitute a total mockery of democracy. In these and the election to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation a week earlier, there was a high degree of people’s enthusiasm and a large number of women turned out to cast their vote
The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) expresses its deep sorrow at the devastating impact of the earthquake in Nepal. It extends its condolences to the families of the hundreds who were reportedly killed in the earthquake. The people of India stand in solidarity with the Nepalese people in this time of calamity. The CPI(M) calls upon the Central Government to immediately provide all necessary assistance to Nepal.
The Left Front will launch a strong protest if democratic rights of the people are attacked during the forthcoming municipality elections, scheduled to be held on April 18 and 25. We will not sit idle if the election process is turned into farce, said Dr Surjya Kanta Mishra, Leader of Opposition and Secretary of CPI (M) West Bengal State Committee, addressing an agitation program convened by the Left Front in front of the State Election Commission office on March 19.
Holding the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government responsible for the rise in number of crimes against women in West Bengal and demanding punishment for the culprits, West Bengal Left Front organised a protest rally on February 6 at Kolkata. More than 30 thousand Left Front workers from 13 districts of South Bengal participated in the rally from Ramlila Park to College Square today.

Durgapur, with rich legacy of workers’ militant struggles, is on the path of resistance again. A three-day, 55 kms march by thousands of people started on Monday from Durgapur. The people are demanding policies to save industries and defend workers’ rights.
A Left Front Parties delegation led by Biman Basu (Chairman, Left Front Committee, West Bengal), Sitaram Yechury (MP, leader of the CPI(M) Group in Rajya Sabha), Abani Roy (Ex-MP, Revolutionary Socialist Party) Surjya Kanta Mishra (Leader of the Opposition, Legislative Assembly of West Bengal), Pallab Sengupta (Communist Party of India) and Ali Imran Ramz (Member, Legislative Assembly of West Bengal, Forward Bloc) met the Prime Minister today on the issue of financial irregularities and fraud committed by financial companies in West Bengal. The delegation submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister.
