The BJP heads the central government and the Haryana government and is a partner of the ruling coalition in Punjab. Given this situation, the central government must urgently intervene to ensure that tensions do not escalate. It is imperative that an agreement be evolved at the earliest.
The fresh controversy over interstate distribution of river waters and completion of Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal is very unfortunate. Interstate issues should not be allowed to yet again affect the cordial relations between the people of various states.
The Mullaperiyar dam issue is being considered by the Supreme Court which appointed an empowered committee to enquire into the various aspects of the problems. The Supreme Court should expedite the process and come to an early judgement on the matter. Till then, the Central government should intervene and decide on the immediate measures that are required to ensure the safety of the dam, in consultation with the Kerala and Tamilnadu governments.
