Samar Choudhury Dies

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) is deeply grieved at the passing away of Com. Samar Choudhury, CPI(M) member of the Lok Sabha and member of the secretariat of the Tripura State Committee of the Party. Com. Samar Choudhury had been seriously ill with cancer for the past few months and he died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at New Delhi.

Comrade Samar Choudhury was a veteran leader of the communist movement in Tripura. Since he joined the Party in 1952 he had played an important role in developing the Kisan movement and building the Communist Party. He was five times a member of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. He served in the first three Left Front governments as a minister.

Comrade Samar Choudhury served for a long time as the secretary of the state unit of the All India Kisan Sabha. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1998 and was re-elected in 1999. Com. Samar Choudhury was known for his capacity as an organiser and for his hard and dedicated work for the Party. In his death, the Party and the kisan movement have suffered a serious loss. The Polit Bureau conveys its heartfelt condolences to his wife, sons, daughters and other family members.
