The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:
Strong Condemnation of U.S. Aggression and Kidnapping Conspiracy
A broad-based public meeting in solidarity with Venezuela was organised today at the Harkishan Singh Surjeet Bhavan, New Delhi, to protest against U.S. aggression, the conspiracy to abduct the democratically elected President of Venezuela and the First Lady, and to express solidarity with the people of Venezuela.
The meeting was addressed by leaders and Members of Parliament from several political parties, including:
M. A. Baby [General Secretary, CPI(M)]
D. Raja (General Secretary, CPI)
Ravi Rai (Polit Bureau Member, CPI (ML) Liberation)
G. Devarajan (General Secretary, AIFB)
R. S. Dagar (Central Secretariat Member, RSP)
Tiruchi Siva (MP, Leader of DMK in Rajya Sabha)
Thol. Thirumavalavan (MP, National President of VCK)
Javed Ali Khan (MP, Samajwadi Party)
Manoj Jha (MP, RJD) and
Sandeep Pathak (MP, Aam Aadmi Party)
All speakers unequivocally condemned U.S. imperialist aggression against Venezuela and described it as a gross violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the principle of national sovereignty. They underlined that interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign country and conspiracies to overthrow or abduct an elected leadership set a dangerous precedent for the entire world.
The meeting was chaired by Prakash Karat. In his presidential address, he stressed that at a time when might is being placed above right, it is essential for democratic and progressive forces to speak out clearly and courageously. He recalled that the people of India have a proud tradition of opposing imperialism and defending sovereignty, a tradition that must be upheld today.
A Resolution in Solidarity with Venezuela (enclosed below) was unanimously adopted at the meeting. The resolution strongly condemned U.S. aggression, expressed firm solidarity with the people of Venezuela, and called upon the Government of India to pursue an independent, principled foreign policy. It urged the government to openly stand in solidarity with the peoples of Venezuela, Cuba, and Palestine, and to condemn U.S. aggression.
The meeting also appealed to the people of India to raise their voices against imperialist aggression and to stand united in defence of peace, sovereignty, and international law.
Resolution in Solidarity with Venezuela
We, the political parties of India, representing its people, unequivocally condemn the US aggression against Venezuela and the kidnapping of its elected President, Nicolás Maduro, and First Lady, Cilia Flores.
We also denounce the US threats against Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, Iran and Greenland.
These actions by the United States violate the UN Charter, which calls for respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign countries.
US aggression is a brazen attempt to seize Venezuela’s rich natural resources, particularly its oil. The United States seeks to take over and control the world’s largest known oil reserves, located in Venezuela. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has already held a series of meetings with US oil executives and is reportedly planning this takeover.
The National Security Strategy, 2025 of the United States declares its intention to implement the Trump Corollary of the infamous Monroe Doctrine, aiming to dominate the entire Latin American region. The U.S. has openly declared that it will not allow Latin American countries to trade with nations outside the region. This constitutes nothing but modern-day gangsterism and bullying. We strongly condemn this transgression of the rights of the sovereign countries of Latin America.
We declare our unwavering solidarity with the people of Venezuela, who are on the streets resisting US aggression and demanding the release of their President and First Lady.
We also express our solidarity with the people of Cuba, who have been subjected to the most inhuman blockade by the United States and are now threatened with direct military aggression.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and all other countries resisting the aggression of the United States and its allies, including Israel.
The people of India cherish their freedom and sovereignty and wish the same for the people of all countries. India’s foreign policy once reflected this proud legacy. However, the foreign policy pursued by the present BJP-led Union government has departed from this tradition. The government has succumbed to US pressure and is unwilling to stand in defence of the rights of the Global South. We demand that the government change this subservient foreign policy and assert its independence. We urge the Government of India to explicitly express its solidarity with the people of Venezuela, Cuba, and Palestine, and to condemn US aggression.
We appeal to the people of our country to stand in solidarity with Venezuela and to condemn US aggression. Aggressors and bullies are a threat to world peace; they are a danger to everyone. It is our collective responsibility to oppose such aggression and to stand in defence of sovereignty.
