As per the latest decision of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), India cannot access sensitive nuclear technology as it is not a signatory to the Non Proliferation Treaty. At the time of the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, the Left parties had pointed out that contrary to the claim of the Prime Minister and the UPA government, India will not be able to import enrichment and reprocessing equipment and technology. The United States had clearly barred such technology being transferred to India.
The UPA government then claimed that the exemption from the Nuclear Suppliers Group will enable India to access such technology from other countries. The government had claimed that it had got a “clean” waiver. The Prime Minister had told Parliament time and again that the Indo-US nuclear deal would involve cooperation for the full nuclear fuel cycle.
Now the UPA government seeks comfort from the American assurance that the exemption given to India will, in no way, be diluted. This is patently false. First of all, the United States did not commit to provide sensitive nuclear technology to India. Moreover, it is the United States which took the initiative to get the new guidelines adopted by the NSG.
The Prime Minister and the UPA government have been exposed for misleading Parliament and the people of the country.
