The Left parties organised an anti-imperialist rally in Kolkata on Sunday, September 1 in which tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Kolkata. The rally denounced sharply the attempt by the US to militarily intervene in Syria, growing US influence in Indian policy-making and enhanced US military planning in Asia-Pacific region.
The rally started from Rani Rasmoni Road in downtown Kolkata and marched through nearly 10 kilometers, ending in Deshbandhu Park in northern Kolkata. Chairman of the Left Front, Biman Basu and other Left leaders led the march while the former addressed the gathering in the beginning and explained the growing pressure of US imperialism on India.
Mass organisations of different sections, particularly of students and youth, participated enthusiastically. Colourful tableaus, posters and festoons adorned the rally in which the most vociferous slogans were “Hands off Syria” and “US Imperialism out of Middle-East”
