Com. Chittabrata Majumdar
The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) expresses its deep grief at the passing away of Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar, member of the Polit Bureau and General Secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions. Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar died in a hospital in Kolkata while undergoing treatment for respiratory problems. He was seventy one years old.
Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar was attracted to the Communist Party while a student. He joined the Communist Party in 1957. After being in the student movement he became associated with trade union work. As Party organiser in Howrah disrrict he built the trade union movement in various industries. At the time of the split in the united party, Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar joined the CPI(M) and played a significant role in building the Howrah unit of the Party.
He was in jail for a year and four months under the Defence of India Act in 1965-66.
Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar was elected to the West Bengal State Committee of the Party in in 1982. He became a member of the State Secretariat in 1985. He was involved in Party education and wrote a number of booklets and pamphlets.
He was elected to the Central Committee at the 15th Congress of the Party in 1995. He became a member of the Polit Bureau at the 18th Congress of the Party in 2005.
With his years of dedicated work, Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar made an immense contribution to developing the working class movement in West Bengal. As a minister in the West Bengal government between 1977 and 1982 he played an important role in developing the cottage and small scale industries.
He was currently a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar was a communist who all through his life worked with great dedication and discipline with deep Marxist-Leninist conviction. As a member of the Polit Bureau and General Secretary of the CITU, Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar worked tirelessly despite his ill-health to discharge his responsibility.
In his death, the Party and the working class movement have lost a leader of great integrity and commitment. His life and work for the movement will always be cherished.
