The Polit Bureau expresses its serious concern at the situation developing around the Supreme Court decision to take up the case of the Ayodhya dispute later.
Alarming statements are being made by the leaders of the BJP-RSS and Central Ministers of the BJP government threatening to create a 1992 situation that led to the demolition of the Babri Masjid and left a trial and blood-shed and mayhem in communal riots across the country.
The 1994 Supreme Court verdict had described the Babri Masjid demolition as a “national shame” and stated, “What was demolished was not merely an ancient structure but the faith of the minorities in the sense of justice and fair play of (the) majority. It shook their faith in the rule of law and constitutional processes”.
The BJP had officially stated that it shall abide by the apex court judgement. It is now engaging in a volte face as the general elections are drawing close. Led by the RSS, strident demands are being raised for the enactment of a new law for temple construction. This is tantamount to subversion of the judicial process. This is unconstitutional, hence, illegal.
By whipping up passions over the Ayodhya dispute and raising the demand for the construction of a temple, RSS/BJP aim to further sharpen communal polarization in the country, which has horrendous consequences. The effort to consolidate the Hindutva communal vote bank in the run-up to the elections, apart from seeking to divert people’s attention away from the all-round failure of the Modi government, poses grave dangers to our country’s unity and integrity.
The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) calls upon the BJP Central Government to stop patronizing such forces who are out to destroy the unity of our country’s social fabric and BJP state government in Uttar Pradesh to faithfully discharge its responsibilities in maintaining law and order.
