Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The deposition before the Liberhan Commission by L.K. Advani, the Union Home Minister, is a prime example of doublespeak. On the first day, he announces that he was pained at the demolition of the Babri Masjid. On the very next day, he asserts that for the past 51 years there has been a temple at the site. The hypocrisy of this stance is evident when Advani claims that what was a defacto temple has become dejure after the demolition.

This is a stand which is indistinguishable from the position taken by the RSS-VHP combine. Worst still is the fact that the Union Home Minister is asserting that there was no mosque at the site at Ayodhya and he has virtually rejected the judicial process underway in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court.

The devious posturing adopted by Advani must be seen in the context where he, himself, has been chargesheeted by the CBI in the Babri Masjid demolition case. The implications of this stand of the Union Home Minister is serious for the country. The BJP-led government, through the Union Home Minister, has announced that it does not accept the judicial process. It has signalled to the VHP-RSS combine that it is complicit in the conspiracy to construct a Ram temple at the disputed site. The stand taken by the opposition parties during the last winter session of Parliament that all those charged in the Ayodhya demolition case must quit the Union Cabinet stands vindicted.
