Press Statement
The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:
The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly disapproves of the proposed hikes in the salaries and allowances of the members of parliament. This comes particularly at a time when reports of distress suicides and starvation deaths in the rural areas are on the rise. Vast tracts of the country are affected by drought and floods, unemployment opportunities are dwindling and the livelihood conditions of the people is deteriorating. Even the middle class is suffering from the unprecedented loot of their life time savings. At such a time when the economy is on a severe downslide in all sectors, it is unjustified to introduce such a hike.
The CPI(M) calls upon the government to reconsider this decision.
