Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

On  UP  Political  Situation

The Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh has collapsed with the withdrawal of support by the BJP.  The demand for dissolution of the Assembly or the imposition of President's rule  cannot be accepted.  It is now incumbent upon the Governor of Uttar Pradesh to explore the possibility of the formation of an alternative government.  Democratic norms demand that the leader of the single largest party in the Assembly, the Samajwadi Party, be asked to form the government.  The new government, which will be formed, should be asked to prove its majority in the Assembly.
