In a curious  turn of events, the stone pelting incident on Chief Minister Oomen Chandy has boomeranged on the Congress. Television footage aired by a section of the media has shown that the person who hurled stones on the Chief Minister was a Congressman. This puts a spanner in the works for the relentless and vicious campaign against CPI (M) and Left Democratic Front carried out by ruling UDF and the media over the past three days. The police had launched a virtual witch hunt over the last three days targeting innocent CPI (M) workers who had participated in the protest, on the basis of some television footage. Cases were registered against many CPI (M) workers including two legislators, K K Narayanan and C Krishnan under the section of 307 of IPC and various other sections.

In August, the state intelligence wing had informed the home department about the possibility of certain anti social elements infiltrated into protesting LDF workers in different parts of the state. LDF has been demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy who is tainted in the multi crore Solar panel scam.

The visuals aired by channels clearly show the face of Palliparambil Kunjimuhammed, from Kolecheri, Kannur district pelting stones. Kunjimuhammed is an active Congress worker and is involved in various criminal activities. He was involved in a case relating to setting ablaze of the Muslim League office in Kolecheri. People from Kolecheri too identified Kunjimuhammed from the visuals which have been uploaded on Youtube and Facebook with caption of ‘DYFI worker pelting stone on Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’. Pro UDF news papers like Malayala Manorama too published the photo of Kunjimuhammed with the same caption. District Congress Committee member Baby Odampally was also seen in these visuals.

Soon after these visuals were telecast, in an attempt at defence, Kunjimuhammed presented himself before the media along with Congress leaders in Kannur. While admitting that he had pelted stones, both Kunjimuhammed and the DCC president Surendran claimed that the stone was pelted on LDF workers and not on the Chief Minister. However, they were unable to answer the question as to why Kunjimuhammed infiltrated into the group of LDF workers.

CPI(M) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said that the visuals have busted the truth behind the fake story of stone pelting, which he is the product of a high level conspiracy hatched by the Congress leadership. Meanwhile, CPI(M) politburo member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has demanded the immediate arrest of Kunjimuhammed.
