The fifth death anniversary of former CPI(M) General Secretary Com. Harkishan Singh Surjeet was observed at his native village Bundala, in Jalandher district of Punjab. Thousands of people and leaders of several parties attended the function to pay tribute to Com. Surjeet.
 
Com. Mohd. Salim while paying rich tributes to Com. Surjeet remembered him for the struggles for the betterment of common people and for giving right direction to the people during his life and even after death. Even today, we have to fight consistently to uplift the working class, peasantry and women. The capitalist model of governance is to be changed by sustained struggles of working class, peasantry and common people of country. Surjeet fought against imperialism throughout his life. On the economic front there is no difference between the Congress and BJP. The BJP supported PFRDA, FDI, Ban on recruitment, implementation of Neo-liberal policies. Com. Salim also criticized the West Bengal government for crushing the democratic rights of the people. Com. Charn Singh Virdi, state secretary CPI (M) while paying tributes to Com. Surjeet said that the CPI (M) will launch awareness campaign to explain the alternative policies proposed by the Left parties.
 
Shri Manpreet Singh Brar said that people like com. Surjeet never die and become immortal. They are remembered for ever for their contribution in building the society, their struggles for secularism, working class, peasantry, women and downtrodden. He further said that we have to take guidance from the life of Com. Surjeet to eradicate social evils from the society.
Shri Balwant Singh Raoowalia shared the moments he spent with Com. Surjeet and announced contribution of rupees one lakh for the upcoming Surjeet Bhawan. Com. Joginder Dyal and Com. Bant Singh Brar of CPI cautioned against the growing influence of communal forces.
