In a most brutal and shocking incident unheard of in the history of Kerala, a police team targeted a youth participating in a peaceful protest by the LDF against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Sub Inspector, Mr. Vijayadas brutally attacked Mr. Jayaprasad, a DYFI activist from Thiruvananthapuram. While his colleagues held Mr. Jayaprasad tightly, Mr. Vijayadas repeatedly stamped on Jayaprasad’s gentials. Consequent to the attack Jayaprasad collapsed on the spot. He had to be hospitalized and his condition is stated to be critical. He is a branch secretary of the CPI (M).
Jayaprasad was part of LDF activists participating in a protest at Kazhakkoottam, against scam-tainted Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who was there to attend a function on September 4. While LDF workers showed black flags on the Chief Minister, the Police suddenly caught hold of Jayaprasad, and started kicking on his private parts.
CPI (M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition leader V S Achuthandan have demanded a thorough inquiry into this incident as well as the registration of a case against the concerned police officer.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has decided to take cognizance of this brutal incident. Commission chairman Justice K G Balakrishnan has assured DYFI President M B Rajesh M P that the Commission will send notice to the state government. Rajesh handed over a memorandum seeking the immediate intervention of the NHRC.
