Trinamool Congress hooligans attacked CPI(M) leaders at Belghoria in North 24 Paraganas district late on the night of April 6. Three senior CPI(M) leaders were injured in the attack. Acting District Secretary of CPI(M) Nepaldeb Bhattacharya said that Trinamool workers beat up party’s cadres and leaders. Left Front Chairman Biman Basu and CPI(M) State Secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra went to the spot. A 10-hour Bandh has been called in Kamarhati municipality area on Wednesday to protest against the incident. The area goes for civic polls on April 25.
CPI(M) district secretariat member and former MLA Manash Mukhopadhyay received a blow on his forehead resulting in a fracture. CITU District secretary Subhash Mukhopadhyay was badly thrashed with rods. Both leaders were rushed to hospital.
Late on Monday, both leaders were attacked near Belghoria Metro station. They were going there after receiving reports that the secretary of East Belghoria Local Committee of the party, Nandalal Basu, had been gheraoed by TMC miscreants in Belghoria.
“They were all carrying rods or sticks, some of them were even carrying swords,” said Basu, whose family was also manhandled.“TMC cadres were pasting posters on our wall. We objected and they attacked us.”
He accused the police of being “mute spectators” during the incident.“Their intention was to kill me. I was hit with an iron rod on my neck,” said Subhash Mukhopadhyay.Following the incident six persons were arrested. The CPI (M) leadership said that Basu’s brother, who is a sitting councilor and a contesting candidate, had also been arrested.
